Ecstasy through rhythm

Tarab is ‘the ecstasy that comes with sound’ in Arabic. This workshop will introduce music principles from different cultures that connect performances to a ‘trance’ state; both as a listener or a performer. Participants will get to explore Karnatic and Gamelan music as well as rhythmical structures from the Caribbean and West Africa. Polyrhythms, interlocking structures, rhythmical modulation, intonation and vertical rhythmical development will all be studied and later on applied through composition and improvisation.

The workshop is open to those interested in exploring various cultures through music as well as those who wish to develop their rhythmical skills and approach.

Η λέξη “Tarab” αφορά την έκσταση που μπορεί να προκαλέσει ο ήχος. Το εργαστήρι θα εστιάζεται σε μουσικές παραδόσεις που συσχετίζονται με την ένταξη ενός ατόμου ή συνόλου σε μια συνθήκη έκστασης μέσα από τον ήχο. Οι συμμετέχοντες θα εμβαθύνουν σε ρυθμικές πρακτικές από τη Καρνατική μουσική, την Γκάμελαν καθώς και στοιχεία από την Καραϊβική και Δυτική Αφρική. Πολυρυθμίες, αλληλένδετα ρυθμικά μοτίβα, ρυθμική ανάπτυξη αντίστοιχη, ασυγκέραστα συστήματα μουσικής και άλλα, θα συζητηθούν και θα εφαρμοστούν μέσα από τη σύνθεση και τον αυτοσχεδιασμό.

Το εργαστήρι είναι ανοιχτό σε όσα άτομα επιθυμούν να εξερευνήσουν διάφορες μουσικές παραδόσεις και θέλουν να αναπτύξουν την ρυθμική τους αντίληψη και ικανότητα.
Cost of participation is set at €232.50, including 5 lunch meals and a Louvana Records gift bag. 

All registrations secured and paid for will include a 50% discount for one non-transferable three-day ticket to Fengaros Festival (Kornos, 31 July - 2 August 2025).

Refundable cancellations or change of selected workshop will not be accepted beyond the 17th of June 2025.

Participants will get to sign up for their workshop of choice, but will still get to attend sessions of the two other workshops within their pillar, as well as two lectures with instructors outside their pillar.

Cost of participation for the one day KoullouMakka workshop is set at €65.00 including 1 lunch meal.

About Andys Skordis


Andys Skordis (Cyprus, 1983) is a contemporary composer specializing in large-scale works, music theater, and site-specific performances. He studied composition at Berklee College of Music and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, with additional studies in Karnatic music under Dr. Rafael Reina and Balinese Gamelan at ISI Denpasar in Bali. His work list includes over 80 works, ranging from operas, orchestral pieces, chamber music, vocal compositions, and Gamelan works. He has also created and directed music theater performances in locations such as quarries, temples, abandoned buildings, and forests.


Skordis' music has been featured at renowned contemporary festivals, including Holland Festival, November Music, Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Bali Arts Festival, Voix Nouvelles, CTM Festival, Unsafe and Sounds, and Symphony for Asia. He has received commissions from Neuköllner Oper, Athens & Epidaurus Festival, International Ensemble Modern Academy, Gettysburg Symphony Orchestra, Third Coast Percussion group, Orkest de Ereprijs, Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, and more. His music has earned international recognition, including the BUMA Toonzetters Prize, Berlin Opera Prize, Fedora Prize, Black Pencil Prize, First Prize at the International Composition Competition for Piano Quintet, First Prize in Ballet Orchestral Competition, and others. In opera and theater, he has collaborated with directors such as Thanos Papakonstantinou, Michael Marmarinos, Themelis Glynatsis, Martha Frintzila, Miriam Goetz, Jelena Vuksanović, and Elia Kalogianni, as well as choreographers Venetsiana Kalampaliki, Demetris Mytilinaios, and Elena Christodoulidou.


Beyond composing, Skordis is the founder of the contemporary music ensemble PATSIAOURA which he directs, and a co-founder of the Ritual Opera Collective. He also performs with his band OGMIOS, and was a lecturer at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam from 2018 to 2023.

Ο Άντης Σκορδής (Κύπρος, 1983) είναι συνθέτης σύγχρονης μουσικής, με εργογραφία που ξεπερνά τα 80 έργα συμπεριλαμβάνοντας όπερες, συμφωνικά έργα, μουσική δωματίου, κομμάτια Γκάμελαν, μουσική για θέατρο, χορό και ταινίες μικρού μήκους. Σπούδασε σύνθεση στο Berklee College of Music και στο Κονσερβατόριο του Άμστερνταμ, με επιπλέον σπουδές στην Καρνατική μουσική και στην Μπαλινέζικη Γκάμελαν στο ISI Denpasar στο Μπαλί.


Εχει παρουσιάσει έργα του σε φεστιβάλ σύγχρονης μουσικής όπως Holland Festival, November Music, Gaudeamus muziekweek, Bali Arts Festival, Voix Nouvelles, CTM festival, Unsafe and sounds, Symphony for Asia, κ.α. Στο χώρο της όπερας και του θεάτρου έχει συνεργαστεί με τους σκηνοθέτες: Θάνος Παπακωνσταντίνου, Μιχαήλ Μαρμαρινός, Μάρθα Φριντζήλα, Θέμελης Γλυνάτσης, Miriam Goetz, Jelena Vuksanovic, Έλια Καλογιάννη, αλλά και με τους χορογράφους Βενετσιάνα Καλαμπαλίκη, Δημήτρης Μυτιληναίος και Έλενα Χριστοδουλίδου.


Πέραν της σύνθεσης είναι ιδρυτής του σχήματος σύγχρονης μουσικής “ΠΑΤΣΙΑΟΥΡΑ” το οποίο διευθύνει και συνιδρυτής του Ritual Opera Collective, παίζει κιθάρα και κρουστά με την μπάντα του “ΌGMIOS” και υπήρξε λέκτορας στο Κονσερβατόριο του Άμστερνταμ (2018-2023).
