Stefanos Meletiou (Cyprus) - Grooves, Stickings, Subdivisions and their Musical Applications
This workshop’s objective is to flesh out the musical application of grooves, rhythmic subdivisions and innovative stickings for the modern drummer. Participants will apply these concepts in an organised and open-minded yet analytical manner to fit the demands of today’s musical needs. Through a selection of specific routines, participants will expand their technical and aesthetic palette and their responsibilities as drummers both through listening and while performing on the instrument.
Various technical, musical freedom and timing exercises will be explored to gain a deeper understanding of both the how and the why we approach creating, duplicating and organising musical drumming ideas and to form the participant's avenue from the practice room to the gig.
This workshop is open to drummers with a fairly good knowledge of the instrument.

Στόχος του εργαστηρίου είναι να οργανώσει, να αναλύσει και να εφαρμόσει τα grooves, τις ρυθμικές υποδιαιρέσεις και τις τεχνικές για τον σύγχρονο τυμπανιστή. Οι συμμετέχοντες θα εφαρμόσουν αυτές τις έννοιες με οργανωμένο και ανοιχτόμυαλο, αλλά αναλυτικό τρόπο ώστε να ανταποκρίνονται στις σημερινές μουσικές ανάγκες. Μέσα από μια επιλογή συγκεκριμένων ρουτινών, οι συμμετέχοντες θα επεκτείνουν την τεχνική και αισθητική παλέτα τους και τις ευθύνες τους ως τυμπανιστές τόσο μέσω της ακρόασης όσο και κατά την εκτέλεση στο όργανο.
Διάφορες τεχνικές, ασκήσεις μουσικής ελευθερίας και ρυθμού θα διερευνηθούν για να αποκτηθεί μια βαθύτερη κατανόηση τόσο του πώς όσο και του γιατί προσεγγίζουμε τη δημιουργία, την αναπαραγωγή και την οργάνωση τυμπανιστικών μουσικών ιδεών και να διαμορφώσουμε την διαδρομή του συμμετέχοντα από την αίθουσα εξάσκησης μέχρι τη συναυλία.
Αυτό το εργαστήρι είναι ανοιχτό σε τυμπανιστές με αρκετά καλή γνώση του οργάνου.
About Stefanos Meletiou
Coming from a musical family, Stefanos Meletiou started playing piano and drums at the age of six before beginning to actively gig with various bands in Cyprus at age twelve. He moved to Los Angeles, California to attend the Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music in Hollywood, California and attended drum seminars under musicians including Chris Coleman, Thomas Lang, Marco Minnemann, Bernard Galane, Ed Roscetti and Dom Famularo amongst others. During this time, Meletiou was awarded the “Outstanding Player of the Year” award and was featured in media such as Modern Drummer Magazine.
Meletiou studied Classical Percussion at Arte Music Academy under the guidance of Marios Nikolaou (Principal Percussionist of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra). He has performed with symphony orchestras as a percussionist and attended seminars from classical percussionists such as Wieland Welzel of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Frederic Macarez of the Orchestra de Paris, and world renowned marimba soloist Katarzyna Mycka amongst others. At the Sixth International Percussion Competition by the Percussive Arts Society in Athens Greece, Meletiou was awarded third place in the classical snare drum category and second place in the Italy Percussive Arts Society Competition for drum set playing.
Meletiou has recorded numerous studio albums both as a session musician and regular band member. He is part of the blues-rock group The Zilla Project and has recorded and toured Europe with the band, sharing lineups with Adam Levy, Kirk Fletcher, and Bex Marshall. Meletiou is currently preparing for releases with his band Private Garden and with renowned bass player Steve DiGiorgio of Death, Testament amongst others.

Προερχόμενος από μια μουσική οικογένεια, ο Στέφανος Μελετίου άρχισε να παίζει πιάνο και τύμπανα σε ηλικία έξι ετών πριν αρχίσει την ανάμειξη του με διάφορα μουσικά συγκροτήματα στην Κύπρο σε ηλικία δώδεκα ετών. Μετακόμισε στο Λος Άντζελες της Καλιφόρνια για να φοιτήσει στο Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music στο Hollywood και παρακολούθησε σεμινάρια τυμπάνων από μουσικούς όπως ο Κρις Κόλμαν, ο Τόμας Λανγκ, ο Μάρκο Μίνιμαν, ο Μπερνάρντ Γκαλέιν, ο Εντ Ροζέτι και ο Ντομ Φαμουλάρο μεταξύ άλλων. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου, ο Μελέτιου τιμήθηκε με το βραβείο «Outstanding Player of the Year» και προβλήθηκε από μέσα όπως το περιοδικό Modern Drummer.
Ο Μελέτιου σπούδασε κλασικά κρουστά στη Μουσική Ακαδημία Arte υπό την καθοδήγηση του Μάριου Νικολάου (Διευθυντή Κρουστών της Συμφωνικής Ορχήστρας Κύπρου). Έχει εμφανιστεί με συμφωνικές ορχήστρες ως κρουστός και έχει παρακολουθήσει σεμινάρια από κλασικούς κρουστούς όπως ο Wieland Welzel της Φιλαρμονικής του Βερολίνου, ο Frederic Macarez της Ορχήστρας του Παρισιού και η παγκοσμίου φήμης σολίστ της μαρίμπα Katarzyna Mycka μεταξύ άλλων. Στον Έκτο Διεθνή Διαγωνισμό Κρουστών από την Percussive Arts Society στην Αθήνα, ο Μελέτιου έλαβε την τρίτη θέση στην κατηγορία των τυμπάνων κλασικού ταμπούρου και τη δεύτερη θέση στον Italy Percussive Arts Society Competition για το παίξιμο σε σετ.
Ο Μελέτιου έχει ηχογραφήσει αρκετούς δίσκους τόσο ως μουσικός όσο και ως μέλος μπάντας. Είναι μέλος του μπλουζ-ροκ συγκροτήματος The Zilla Project με τους οποίους έχει ηχογραφήσει και περιοδεύσει στην Ευρώπη, όπου μοιράστηκε της σκηνή με μουσικούς όπως τους Άνταμ Λέβι, Κερκ Φλέτσερ και Μπεξ Μάρσαλ. Αυτή τη στιγμή ετοιμάζεται για κυκλοφορίες με το συγκρότημά του Private Garden και με τον διάσημο μπασίστα Steve DiGiorgio των Death και των Testament ανάμεσα σε άλλα.
